Daily Express Interview

Hi Pete and Emma,

Lovely to chat just now. So glad Maxwell had a very Happy Birthday.

As discussed, the Daily Express would love to speak to you tomorrow (20th Jan) at 3pm about Maxwell’s wish with Rays of Sunshine and Merlin’s Magic Wand.

We have shared the below information re: the day with them and they will just want to ask a few questions about this. I have also advised you are keen to raise awareness of Maxwell’s illness and website, so I am sure they will ask you about this too. Of course, it would be amazing if you can mention Rays of Sunshine, so hopefully we can encourage more people to apply for a wish.

Any questions before tomorrow, do let me know but sure all will be fine.

Seriously ill four-year-old has greatest wish granted at Sea Life Centre, thanks to Rays of Sunshine and Merlin’s Magic Wand

New Zebra Shark at Sea Life Brighton named after courageous Maxwell

Yesterday, a seriously ill four-year-old from Thakeham, West Sussex, had his greatest with granted when he attended the official naming ceremony of a brand new Zebra Shark, which was being introduced to Sea Life Centre Brighton’s Ocean Display, thanks to Rays of Sunshine and Merlin’s Magic Wand.

Guest of honour at the naming ceremony, Maxwell, is currently living with Mitochondrial Depletion in the TK2, which is an extremely rare and complex muscle wasting disease. Due to this, Maxwell is fully ventilated 24 hours per day and is dependent on his wheelchair. Despite this, he is a very happy and brave young boy.

Maxwell loves watching fish and his greatest wish was to visit the Sea Life Centre in Brighton.

With the help of children’s charities Rays of Sunshine and Merlin’s Magic Wand, Sea Life Brighton has been able to make that wish come true – and go one step further, naming the aquarium’s newest addition Maxwell in honour of the brave four-year-old.

At the event, Pete, Maxwell’s dad, said:

“Today has been phenomenal for Maxwell and the whole family. Fish and water are Maxwell’s absolute favourite things and he has always loved aquariums. To be able to raise awareness of something as rare as the Zebra Shark as well as Maxwell’s condition is fantastic and having a shark named after Maxwell is amazing. We cannot thank Rays of Sunshine and Merlin’s Magic Wand enough for today.”

The two metre long male zebra shark is joining Sea Life Brighton from a sister aquarium in Holland. Newly-christened Maxwell, he will join Dotty, the female Zebra Shark, as well as Black Tip Reef Sharks, Sandbar Sharks, Sting Ray and two Giant Green Sea Turtles in the Ocean Display at Sea Life Brighton.

A wooden plaque was also unveiled at the aquarium to commemorate Maxwell’s official naming of the Zebra Shark.
